    • I remember when this "new" long life postal truck was in the news. If you think back to US vehicle build quality in the early '80s it is easy to see why commentaries at the time were highly skeptical that a 20 year lifespan was realistic. As it turned out these trucks did last 20 years. Grumman was the right contractor for the job because at that time they were manufacturing durable delivery vans similar to the UPS/Fedex trucks we see today. For all I know they still do. Now let's jump ahead to 2009 when the trucks were scheduled to be replaced. Can you think of anything else that was going on back then? It has a name. I'll give you a minute. (HINT: it rhymes with "the great recession") So anyway the things needed to be replaced or at least seriously maintained but the part of government that writes checks had decided they no longer want to spend money on the post office and even actively worked to undermine postal service, as crazy as that sounds. Maybe it can finally get handled now and the current government can buy some new trucks, hopefully electric. And Ford has announced there will be an electric version of the transit van.

  • Ahh, the old Pontiac Iron Duke. The dual internal/external combustion ability was a feature, not a bug! In all seriousness though, it was a very reliable (if also very unrefined) engine and the fires were specific to only the Fiero and the LLV themselves as far as I'm aware and the fires are not specifically the fault of the engine. Tons of S10s and other random small GMS had these without issue.

  • let me help you out here, That 9MPG is a result of stop and go with a lot of engine shutdown and startup and idle time. You can NOT expect any vehicle to get their listed estimated mileage under those conditions, and I doubt that electric hybrids will be anything but more expensive and more problematic. As for the Iron Duke, it's not a bad engine and you aren't being reasonable in your critique, you're blaming the engine when the issue is the placement of accessories is the cause. The USPS is more the issue than the LLV/ The LLV is the optimum size, Bigger is NOT the solution. And EVERYTHING I have heard from people who drive and repair the LLV is that it's a good design and very fixable. I think you're just making stuff up

We need to contract mail delivery service out to people that live here in our towns that we know . • Every one of those contestants are going to suck in the long run. Electric cars and hybrids are still in the "novelty" stage. They suck on horsepower for the average American, the mileage isn't all that great and repairs can be prohibitively expensive not to mention that they don't go very far per charge. The only one of the three that even has half a chance is the Ford transit but even that's shakey at best.

  • I also think it would be cool when they finally do phase-out the Grumman llv, if they go on sale for the General Public. I would love to replace the Iron Duke 4 cylinder with a high output 4.3 L Vortec V6 out of the S10 Xtreme it would give it more power but it wouldn't be stupid crazy fast plus, it would look like it actually belongs in there.

  • In some markets the USPS as actually phased out the Grumman llvs for, Mercedes Metris right-hand-drive hand drive vans. My sister just turned down the opportunity to have one on her mail route, it would cost nothing but she would lose her gas money they pay her I believe it was that she got. So she went and bought another Honda Element, that's what she uses on her rural mail route.

You'd think that spending 9 miles per gallon to have millions of trees cut down, printed as junk mail, shipped by these trucks, and then immediately thrown away would wrankle environmentalists. But not a peep. I've literally gone to the post office to tell them to stop delivering ALL mail to my address. I don't want ANY of it. EVER. As literally 99% of it is junk mail. They said they couldn't do that. Evidently it's their job to give me things that I have to throw away.

I will say that there are some mistakes made in this video. They keep conflating pictures of LLV's with FFV's. LLV's are the vehicles that are more prone to catch on fire. Mostly due the fuel leaks, (cheap hoses on fuel line replacement parts) oil leaks and bad electrical connections at switches. Edit: It has actually been an excellent vehicle. Very easy to work on and pretty reliable for what it's put through.

  • As a postal worker, my personal hope is for the electric truck. Two big reasons: A: I am sick and fucking tired of driving a truck that is literally so slow it's dangerous(I am convinced the LLV's can't reach 60mph). B: we literally drive MAYBE 20 miles per day total. I don't think a battery mileage of 300 miles is gonna be a problem for us. Oh, and then there's the fact that stopping and starting a gas engine is horrible for its lifespan. Electric motors literally do that as their primary function.
