  • Nolan, I have a 2018 Crosstrek I bought used. 6spd manual. I'm averaging 28 MPG...it has a very short first gear, good clearance and can maintain highway speeds with ease. My ex's RAV 4 is a bit more comfy...and easier to work on , but I like the flat 4.

  • Dude YES get a crosstrek! Its small, but I love taking it camping, ive slept out of it, on top of it, next to it. Forded rivers in it, you cant get the thing stuck! The AWD is closer to 4 wheel drive than the AWD from 10 years ago with its viscous limited slip diff. Oh also would you tell James ive found his adopted father. Matts offroad recovery is his father, like 99% sure

  • Totally agree with this video. Seems like many trails in my area have gotten worse as a result of the recent overlanding craze. I’ve seen it first hand. Increased vehicle traffic is has contributed to increased erosion and ruts in existing trails making them more difficult to drive. Vegetation damage. More trash. Fewer nice spots to enjoy the outdoors without crowds. Also not to mention all the inexperienced out there making mistakes and getting stuck. Disclaimer: I do not overland but often drive forest service roads for work or sometimes to reach a nice fishing spot.

  • Best way to explore is by dual-sport motorcycle, bicycle or on foot. By all means, use your car to go the national park but when over there, just walk or cycle! It's way more fun and will reduced your chances of spreading the image of fat 'Muricans. Plus you'll even be able to hear the sound of your famous Eagle, thing you wouldn't not be able to do in your SUV with A/C turned on.

  • I have a 2014 Crosstrek. The CVT can be frustrating at times. My remedy for the "lack of power" is using the paddle shifters to downshift. The engine is totally adequate when used with a manual transmission or paddle shifting override. Not much into camping but I do take it to the trailhead for hiking/biking. Also a pretty nice ride for a day trip into the mountains. Taken mine to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite already.

  • I used to work for subaru and when I needed to go on a parts run or just go get food I would take a company crosstrek sport. I think the crosstrek is actually one of the best vehicles in their lineup. It's a pretty spacious ride for the size of the car with plenty of room to haul people, pets, or just trip essentials. The ride height is a great too, at a goldilocks level of not too high and not too low. You'll clear small to mid-sized rocks, especially with a lift kit, but you don't have to worry about not seeing the road in front of you. I loved the sporty feeling of it as well, even though it's not a fast car by any means, it makes you feel like it's a racecar. If you're in the market for one I'd say go for it, but you might wanna buy it new since subaru owners tend to trash their interiors haha

  • I'm 70 years old. Back in the late 50's, my parents started taking us kids camping to National Parks like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Yosemite. We camped in a tent, as did most people in those days. There were no palatial motorhomes, no 5th wheel monstrosities being pulled by behemoth, gas guzzling pick-up trucks. As a result, we'd pull the family station wagon into a Park like Yosemite, pay our fee, pick out a campsite, pitch our tent and lay out our sleeping bags. It was a unique wilderness experience that we simply could not get living in the city or in the cookie cutter suburbs that were rapidly expanding throughout the country. There were no reservations required, no eternal lines of traffic and no shuttle busses because of the traffic. All that has changed. The crowds at the more popular National Parks are ridiculous! Reservations are sometimes required a year in advance. In an effort to escape these "Disneylands of the wilderness", people have purchased vehicles capable of going into more remote areas away from paved roads, and away from the hordes of people that now overwhelm many National Parks. However, in so doing we've created more problems. Sensitive environmental areas are being overrun by too many overlanders with their rigs equipped with heavy off road tires leaving their scarring "footprints" on the land. Thoughtless, inconsiderate people leave trash and other debris, including human feces for others to clean up. They don't follow the rules by overstaying their time limits. The homeless have found sanctuary on BLM and U.S. Forest lands and erected semi-permanent camps. While young partiers take their alcohol and guns out for wild weekends in their 4 wheel drive pick-up trucks. The government is always short of funds when it comes to many of these lands so the end result is more and more are getting shut down, ruining for everyone. We all love our wilderness areas and it seems we are loving them to death. I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that future generations are going to pay for it.

  • I've had my Crosstrek for 3 years and it's a very capable car for light to medium overlanding as it comes. I have the 6 speed manual so I can't speak to the CVT issues that some people complain about. The stock ground clearance was good enough for me to take on moderately rough forest service roads although I have since added a 2.5" lift and larger tires to help with the rougher roads I have to travel for work. I did build a sleeping platform for the back because I was spending months at a time living out of it with my dog and the backseat does not fold flush with the hatch area. I'm not a tall person (5'7") but I fit perfectly sleeping in the back. I will admit for long periods of time it can be cramped to live out of like this which is why I'm building a small off-road teardrop trailer to tow behind it, but for shorter trips it works great.

  • Not a crosstrek owner but currently own an outback and this is my fifth subaru after two wrxs and two outback sports (similar size to a crosstrek) i test drove a couple crosstreks before I decided on the outback cause I wanted more room for trips. They got just enough power for its weight, not fast but zippy or quick. Great gas mileage after driving a v8 4runner. Maintenance can be a lil pricey but if you stay on they last. And if you pick one up and go that route of overlanding, it'd make a great series. Smaller wagons and crossovers can do a lot with a little and it can show those who are interested but don't wanna buy a new 40k car or a 8k 2000s suv. Gives that happy medium of nice daily to cruise around in but also you can take it to the woods and spent some time.

It’s my daily to work and school And hopefully when I find the time I can take it out on some trails. And if you get snow, trust me Subaru is the best car to have, when the Texas snow storm hit I was driving around pretty much all week and didn’t slip a single when I didn’t want to. But when I did want to slip, you can control the drifts perfectly in this car. So yes I highly highly recommend this car if you don’t care about the underpowered issue.

And the only fix is to use the same programming methods to make people care about the environment . It works for religion , it sells cars and many other things by programming people into believing that they need that product . Hell it's convinced a whole generation of people into thinking their 4 door front wheel drive garbage is a sports car . Programming could be used for some good , instead of just a way to make money and take advantage of people .
